I feel as nervous as Eminem while writing this first blog post. My palms are sweating all over my new laptop, my knees are weak, and it’s not vomit from “mom’s spaghetti” on my sweater, but it’s still gross and I need to put it in the wash. The last time I wrote anything was about 5 years ago at Uni so I’m as curious and nervous as you are to see how this goes…
Since this is going to be predominately a fashion related blog, I thought it would be appropriate for this first post to introduce you to my style. I think that “style” is a word that scares a lot of people because it’s asking someone to put themselves into a box and stay there. I don’t believe that’s what fashion is about. I think a person’s style can be fluid and ever evolving. It doesn’t have to be defined as one thing, as I’ll show you with mine. These are three looks that show different aspects of my personal style and I’ll talk you through my process of how I create an outfit. Ill go into more detail in future posts but I hope this helps you understand how I think about fashion, and how you can apply it to your own fashion choices.
This first look is made almost entirely out of basics, or what I like to call, the “water” of your wardrobe, (I will explain that more in future blog posts). This jumpsuit always has my back whenever I don’t know what to wear. It’s a simple, boob-tube style with a nice wide leg which pays homage to my favourite fashion era, the 70’s!
I’ve worn it here with what I think is one of the accessories of the season, the basket bag. I scored one of these asap because I love anything that has a unique twist. Guys don’t seem to understand it though, a few of my friends think it’s a water canteen, and I guess they’re not wrong. For me, an outfit doesn’t really feel right unless my shoes match my bag, so I wore my trusty brown, strappy heels.
And lastly, I thought I’d jazz my basic pieces it up a bit with a trend that did the rounds last year, the bandana/choker trend. I see trends as a good source of inspiration, so imma pull them out whenever I feel like it!
This next outfit is what you’ll find me in most often. It is comprised of three of my go to pieces at the moment; white converse, a dress and my baker boy cap. I love outfits that are effortlessly cool, something that is easy to throw on but still interesting. This maxi dress ticks all of those boxes. It’s the right length, which is hard for me to find being 5’9, because I will not tolerate any ankle grazing maxi dresses. If it doesn’t skim the floor, its not “maxi” and it’s not for me.
I layered a white bodysuit underneath for a bit of modesty and so I can match my whites. Cue the white Converse! A staple in every wardrobe. In the Converse vs Vans rivalry, I’m definitely not sitting on any fences. If I was a millionaire, I’d buy a fresh pair every six months.
And the piece de resistance, the accessory that seemed to take over the world overnight, the “if you don’t have one, go get one” piece, the baker boy cap. I love a good hat, I think it’s a top accessory, excuse the pun, but I think I might have to name my first-born son “baker boy” I love it that much. Covers all manner of greasy hair sins and gives that instant, polished, cool factor.
My last look is my girlboss look. It’s bold, it’s boss, it kicks butt. Unfortunately, it’s a rarity for me to dress like this because my day to day girlboss look is currently high vis and steel cap boots but I’ve got this one in my back pocket for when the time comes. Gingham made a massive appearance last season and thankfully it looks like it’s here to stay. These pants were a bit of a gamble for me but I’m glad I placed my bets on them because they are a real head turner.
The blazer is what steals the show for me though. It was a bit of a splurge item from Sass and Bide (that went on sale shortly after I bought it, don’t you hate that?!) but again, I love a staple piece with a bit of interest and those painted symbols are pretty special. I pulled out the red in the jacket with my red strappy heels and a beauty staple for me, red lips.
Because everything else is bold and competing for attention, I went with one of my basics, a black cami, to complete the look and to give your eyes a bit of a rest.
So that brings us to the end of my first official blog post! Time to crack open the champagne! I hope this gave you a few ideas into how you can apply trends and different styles into your own looks. If you have reached this point, thank you for taking time out of your day to spend with me in my little corner of the internet. I’ll be doing this once a week, with a different topic each week, so if you have any questions for me or any topics you would like me to cover, I’d love for you to leave me a comment. I’m finishing this post on my break, so for now I’m off to drive a crane!
